eknath easwaran

I’ve been thinking and reading about meditation for awhile, and now and then, dabbling. I guess that’s the right word since I’ve not yet become an every day meditator. Then last month, I found a teacher in a thin book squeezed into a very narrow space on a shelf with many larger books overshadowing it. I don’t know why, but whenever I see a small book trying to hold its own with the big ones, I make every effort to release it. As it turned out the little book titled, Your Life Is Your Mesage by Eknath Easwaran is a gem. On the back cover Barbra Streisand wrote, “Your Life Is Your Message is about changing the world by changing ourselves.” And Marvin Hamlisch wrote, “I still can’t believe how much wisdom is packed into these slender pages. This isn’t just a book; it’s a friend.” I think that about sums it up.

Eknath Easwaran founded the Blue Mountain Center of Meditation in Tomales, California. I have the feeling from reading his words, that if anyone can lead another to the path of meditation, he can. I’d never heard of him before rescuing “Your Life Is Your Message” from its tight spot on a book shelf. Then recently, while walking on a clear, cool day, I noticed a used bookshop having a sale. A lot of people were on the sidewalk peering across long tables of books. I joined them, and found The Devil and Miss Prym by Paulo Coelho, and The Vagabond by Colette for a song and a dance. Then I went inside the shop, and something caught my eye. Yes! -MEDITATION by Eknath Easwaran was calling me. I took it from the shelf; there was no doubt in my mind that it belonged with me. On the back cover Henri Nouwen wrote, “This book has helped me a great deal.” And Huston Smith wrote, “No extravagant claims, no pretentious jargon. Just a clear, insightful exposition of meditation, and an excellent guide to its practice.” I think so, too.

What are you reading these days?

I’m on page 116 of ESSAYS WHAT DO WOMEN WANT? by Erica Jong. I read it in 1998 when it first came out, and now again in its revised form. I like the way she writes; she gets the reader to think a little differently. She doesn’t just dance around the surface when she writes. She gets deep down dirty, and digs up everything about the subject she’s writing about – oftentimes about things most writers missed, or wouldn’t/couldn’t touch. Clearly she’s done her homework in order to write with this level of insightful abandonment.

And I’m reading ESSENTIAL SPIRITUALITY recommended by “physicist-turned-futurist Peter Russell.” Ode Magazine March 2009 had a write-up about him. It was impressive so I checked out his website: www.peterrussell.com That too is impressive, and it was there that I decided to get one of the books he’s listed on his website, ESSENTIAL SPIRITUALITY by Roger Walsh, M.D.,PhD. Perhaps you’ll want to read it; it’s simply written, and the author shares with us the path he’s traveled in his quest for spiritual knowledge. It’s not stuffy; it’s wonderful reading.

And I’m reading one page every so often of Total Freedom by J. Krishnamurti. What can one say about him? Is he in a class by himself? It seems so. I have to absorb what he says in small doses because he says so much in such a simple way. No need to read it as though reading a novel.

A NEW EARTH by Eckhart Tolle is a book I want by my side so that I can open any page in the book and appreciate his words. It’s an Aha kind of book.

I’m listening now to Blessed Always AGAPE CHANT ANTHOLOGY. Any time is a good time to listen to these CD’s. They grab the soul.

Have a beautiful day.

manly p. hall

Recently I read The Secret Teachings of All Ages by Manly P. Hall. It’s not the kind of book you can breeze through, and if you read it before bedtime, you might find yourself awake in the wee hours of the morning – wondering. He offered the book to humanity by these words: “This book is dedicated to the Rational Soul of the World.” Manly P. Hall was called a teacher, a sage, a mystic, a scholar. In The Secret Teachings he discusses Ancient Teachings, Ancient Mysteries, Ancient Philsophers, Secret Societies, how they came to be, how they operated, and what became of them, The Qabbalah, Symbolism, The Cryptogram, Islam faith, Mystic Christianity, Bacon, Shakspere, and the Rosierucians, American Indian Symbolism, and more. www.sacred-texts.com/eso/sta

After reading the last inspiring chapter of the book, I searched the web hoping to find a site that discusses the book and the author. It wasn’t difficult. Here is what one had to say: “. . . To read Hall’s work is to experience a readerly joy rarely associated with ordinary compendiums of wisdom. Its depth, breadth, and detail are, simply put, not ordinary, and not easily understood.” And he continues: “But this much is clear; readers who discover The Secret Teachings of All Ages for the first time today will encounter a book probably unlike any they have seen before. The accomplishment of the Secret Teachings, in part, is that it may be the only serious compendium of the last several hundred years that takes the world of myth and symbol on its own terms.” www.mitchhorowitz.com/manly-p-hall.html

Indeed, and I thought that even though it’s “not easily understood” there’s a wanting to stay with it and continue reading, and to read it again. Manly P. Hall founded the Philosophical Research Society in 1934. www.prs.org www.prs.org/mphbio.htm

eckhart tolle

The title of The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle says it all, and the contents of the book is priceless. For starts, it can change one’s ideas about how things are, or ought to be, and take one on the ride of one’s life. It tends to turn one’s thoughts around and around, and get one to agree that, -okay, that’s true; that way is not working for me. I have to do what? All right, if that’s what it takes to stop the misery, I’m on board. And little by little, thoughts and opinions about the past, present, and future, about relationships, about the way the mind is used – the thinking and doing that doesn’t work, and yet has a stranglehold on one’s life, get chiseled away.

A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle has sold over 6 million copies. And what a book it is. The book grabs hold of one’s being – if one let’s it, and if one is not compelled to ask the why of everything when reading it. The meaning of the words will eventually find a place in one’s consciousness, and then a place in one’s outer life.

I’ve noticed that A New Earth is not a book one can give as a gift, I suppose that’s true for The Power of Now, too. That’s been my experience. Well, one can give it, but… A New Earth can’t be a blind date, a person has to chose it for themselves, or the giver will most likely see it untouched, or used as a coaster, or maybe taken out when “they” know you’re coming. The best time for someone to read The Power of Now, or A New Earth, or any book of a spiritual nature, is determined by the one who will be reading it. That makes perfect sense. www.eckharttolle.com

vacations and labor day weekend

For many people Labor Day means closing a beach house, or leaving a rented villa in a beautiful European city, or summer day outings with family and friends, or, shall I count the endless vacation choices? Better not, you say. Okay, I understand; I won’t. In any event, it’s time to head back to a big city, a small town, or the countryside to greet autumn – time to unpack. I hope you’re all well-rested after a lovely summer. Now settle in and have a fun-filled Labor Day weekend. www.dictionary.com Labor Day n. The first Monday in September, observed as a holiday in the United States and Canada in honor of working people. (Australia, too?)

Ahh, but some people have yet to take a vacation; they like traveling during autumn and/or winter. Where are you all going? Will you travel beyond your borders or stay close by? In either case, I’ve got a few websites for you who have yet to pack.

emmet fox (1886-1951)

Seventeen years ago I bought a book titled The Sermon On The Mount The Key To Success In Life. A lot of years passed since I last read it. It was packed away, found, and recently read again because it’s a book with a lot of substance. The www allowed for further information about the writer of the book, Emmet Fox. He was a scientist, philosopher, and spiritual teacher who was born in Ireland, educated in England, lived and worked mostly in the United States, and died in France. His adult life was dedicated to spiritual teachings, people, traveling, and living life energetically. His books are easy to read, deeply moving, and immensely informative. He wrote with intelligence and heart.

Now with a new President of the United States on the horizon, there are two chapters of another of his books, Alter Your Life, that make for very good reading at this particular time in our history. The two chapters are: “The American Spirit – The Principles Underlying the Constitution” on page 166, and “The Historical Destiny of the United States” on page 188. If you’re thinking that you’ve studied it already, you might want to think about reading Emmet Fox’s words. Because to remember why and how the United States of America came into being, and to review the meaning of The Constitution and what took place during and after, and to connect with what our Founding Fathers were all about helps put our thoughts in order. And putting our thoughts in order is extremely important since it appears we’ve strayed far and wide from the original course.

And the rest of the book? Well, you just might want to keep reading.

writers, words, and beautiful sentences found in books

The English language is fraught with delightful words and ways of stringing a sentence together. It’s a great language – a full and fun language – and can be a neat hobby. In a thick Clairefontaine notebook I like writing words, and the way they were used in a particular sentence in a book.

The word miasma, e.g., has a completely different meaning than what I had thought. I’m glad I never had occasion to use it. It’s a pretty-sounding word, isn’t it? I’m also glad that I looked up its meaning on www.dictionary.com for it states: “mi as ma 1. Noxious exhalations from putrescent organic matter poisonous effluvia or germs polluting the atmosphere.” Somewhere along my life’s journey the word miasma became unclear in its meaning.

This past 4th July holiday Sumi and I got to talking about books. She asked what I thought of the one she gave me a month ago. And I had to say that I was confused after reading the first two pages, and returned it to the shelf. She said, keep reading it; it’s a really good story and it’s well-written, and yes, the first few pages are somewhat confusing. She said she really liked the way the author uses words. So when Sumi and I went to Barnes & Noble the following day, I recognized the depth of her enjoyment of “the post-birthday world” when she saw the book on one of the tables Barnes & Noble places around its store. She smiled and pointed to it, and what I saw on her face was a remembering of the pure enjoyment she had in reading it. And she said that one day she’d read it again, just not yet. It’s then that I realized that Sumi wasn’t ever going to get tired of asking whether I’ve read that book. With that in mind, when I finish reading Extra Virgin by Annie Hawes I’ll gladly give “the post birthday world” by Lionel Shriver a whirl.

Annie Hawes also has a way with words. I find Extra Virgin plodding, but in a way I don’t at all mind. The words, the flow of sentences, is delicious, as is the writer’s description of just about everything before her.

Now Sumi read Empire Falls by Richard Russo, but didn’t see the made for tv movie. I saw the movie, but didn’t read the book. One day she said, “This book is very good, mom, do you want to read it? You’ll like it.” I said, “No, I don’t like reading a book after I’ve watched a movie based on it.” She said, “Well, take the book.” I did. The next time, and a few other times, Sumi asked, “Did you read Empire Falls, mom?” I hesitatinghly replied, “No, not yet.” Soon after that conversation, I got the book off its shelf and began to read it. Lo and behold, it was so well-written and engrossing that, in no time at all, I’d read it. And so, I ask myself, where did, “I don’t like reading a book after I’ve watched a movie based on it” come from? Empire Falls – wonderful reading.

A writer who uses words not commonly used, or words that delight the senses and make a reader want to stop and write them in a notebook for future use, or uses words that open a new way of understanding and appreciating a language, who expresses thoughts that the reader feels on different levels, and, at the same time, creates a great story, is a writer whose book will be appreciated for a long time after the book is read.

gregg braden

I picked up the July 2008 FREE Wisdom Magazine www.wisdom-magazine.com at Whole Foods, and in it Publisher Mary Arsenault is interviewing NY Times Bestselling author Gregg Bragen who wrote: The Isaiah Effect, The God Code, The Divine Matrix: Bridging Time, Space, Miracles and Belief. His last book is “now a finalist for the best new science book of 2007.” His newest book is The Spontaneous Healing of Belief. I read the interview three times – once in my apartment, traveling to Brooklyn, and on the return trip to Phila – because powerful words were spoken and I wanted to deeply feel and understand everything that was said.

Gregg Braden and Dr. Darren Weissman will be at the Hilton Philadelphia Airport, 4509 Island Avenue on 1-3 August; the subject is: Recreate! Your Life, Your Health, Our World! www.sacredspaces.org

The August issue of Wisdom will be featuring SACRED JOURNEYS & RETREATS. It sounds good to me. Sounds good to you?

“Our left brain needs to understand why it’s possible for us to affect our world. We know that the world around us is energy and made of electrical and magnetic fields. What our own science has found within the last two or three years is that the human heart is the strongest generator of electrical fields within the human body, about a hundred times stronger than the brain, and it’s the strongest generator of magnetic fields in the body – about 5000 times stronger than the brain. So when we create a feeling in our hearts the way the ancients told us to – feelings of appreciation, gratitude, healing, love and compassion – what we are really doing is creating very powerful waves of electrical and magnetic energy inside our heart that floods our body with these fields and it extends beyond our bodies in the world around us. And that’s how we influence the physical world around us – we can literally rearrange the atoms of physical matter through these fields if we learn to focus and hone this language.” – Gregg Braden

better and better

Many people are in agreement that a healthier way of life is what they want. And because so much information is available in abundance in the marketplace, e.g., such as in the form of information humorously communicated in the easy to read book SKINNY BITCH by Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin, it’s highly possible that our health will get better and better when we start taking control of it. And in our exhilarating quest for health, let’s not forget the importance of a healthy mind. Reading a SETH BOOK THE NATURE OF PERSONAL REALITY by Jane Roberts, or a similar one, brings us to the realization that many of our beliefs are not benefiting us (that’s putting it very mildly), and that we can change them, and allow for a healthier way to be in this life. Sounds good?
